We love nothing more than spending the day at the beach with one of our Stowaway Turkish towels. The last thing that we want is for our day at the beach to negatively effect the planet. Therefore we're always looking at ways that we can reduce our impact on the environment and make our beach days a little more sustainable.
Here we've put together our top 5 tips to help you have a more eco-friendly beach trip. Simple things that we can all do to continue protecting our environment while we enjoy it.
5 Tips to a more Sustainable Beach Trip
1. GRAB A RIDE
Carpool with others when heading to the beach. Take one car or even a bicycle if you’re close enough.
2. REMEMBER YOUR REUSABLES
Prefill your water bottle and pack your reusable coffee cup, straw and cutlery in case you stop off somewhere along the way.
3. PACK YOUR LUNCH
Bring snacks from home in reusable containers to reduce your waste. My summer fav has got to be watermelon - so perfect for the beach!
4. TAKE 3 FOR THE SEA
Be a tidy Kiwi and leave the beach tidier then when you arrived. Take 3 (or more) extra pieces of rubbish or plastic home with you. This is an easy thing to do for anyone and especially with kids. It’s a great way to start teaching them about plastic pollution on our beaches and oceans.
5. REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN
Whatever is on our skin, ends up in the ocean. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are two chemicals that are common in sunscreen that are toxic to coral reefs. You can read more about the impact of sunscreen on our reefs and see what brands of sunscreen we recommend using here.
We are passionate about protecting our beaches and were inspired to start Stowaway after experiencing the extreme plastic pollution in Bali. That's why not only are we committed to sustainability in everything we do; we also choose to donate 5% of profits to selected organisations that help to preserve New Zealand beaches, oceans and marine life.
When you buy from Stowaway you can be sure that we think about the environment in every step of the process.
